LOOK BACK
Gay float included in Erie's 1995 Bicentennial Parade. Photo via Michael Mahler/Erie Gay News

Nowadays this parade story might seem like a bit of fluff, but 30 years ago, being included in this celebration was a very big deal. The float's inclusion was greeted with awful rumor and rancor by the usual suspects, and those who invited and supported it were given a hard time. The Thursday night before the parade, the float was vandalized -- 36 hours before the parade. Immediately, members and allies of the lgbtq+ community dove in and repaired the float, in time for its historic inclusion in the parade. Greg Valiga wrote a lively first-person account that really captures that moment in time, read it here

LGBT
Tale of the GLBT Float in Erie's Bicentennial Parade 1995 In 1995, Erie celebrated its Bicentennial. The Bicentennial Commission approved a float from Erie's gay community, to be included in the Bicentennial Parade which would be held on Saturday May 27. The inclusion was fairly progressive for the time, and did include some controversy, concern, and from certain quarters, open hostility,
Late Thursday, May 25th, the float was heavily vandalized. With 36 hours before the parade, a group of supporters gathered to repair the float, ensuring its conclusion in the Bicentennial Parade. Greg Valiga wrote a wonderful account of the float story, from idea to surprising victory. The account also gives the reader a great feel for that particular moment in time. Greg was one of the organizers of the float and at the time was involved with the League of Gay and Lesbian Voters. This article appeared in the June 1995 issue of Erie Gay Community Newsletter. Also included a float photo gallery. https://www.nwpapride.org/pride-news/glbt-float-in-1995-erie-bicentennial-parade
